Featured Scholar: Priya
Priya’s project “Safety Net” was the runner-up in the “Big Idea” category of the 2017 Girls’ Voices for Change Contest. In her video, she shows us a barrier girls in Kolkata face to getting an education—harassment from boys. On the way to their tutoring sessions, girls get teased and taunted by boys. This has led to girls skipping school and eventually dropping out. Priya’s solution was to create a “safety net” of both girls and boys in order to make girls going to school feel safer. Priya’s solution shows us that everyone–girls and boys–needs to work together in order to change perceptions and create an environment where girls are encouraged to pursue their education.
